Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM)

Ultrasonic thickness measurement, also called UTM or ultrasonic gauging, uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the thickness of suitable materials without cutting into the structure. It is particularly useful for assessing steel hull plating and associated components where material loss may be suspected.

IMF Technical Services Ltd holds approvals for ultrasonic thickness gauging on ship hulls from recognised classification societies, including Lloyd’s Register, DNV, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, INSB and RINA. We also work closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in relation to relevant marine inspection requirements.
